The Falkirk Wheel

The Falkirk Wheel is a unique and impressive piece of engineering located in Falkirk. The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world. It connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, lifting boats 35 meters (115 feet) between the two waterways.

Opened in 2002, it was part of the Millennium Link project aimed at regenerating central Scotland’s canals and reconnecting Glasgow with Edinburgh. The Wheel replaced a series of 11 locks that previously connected the canals.

The structure uses just 1.5 kWh of energy per rotation, which is roughly the same amount of energy needed to boil eight kettles of water.
